Historic Building: Ben Youssef Medersa (Madrasah Ben Youssef)

Ben Youssef Medersa was founded by the Merinid Sultan Abou el-Hassan in the mid-14th century. Morrocco was under the reign of Merinid Dynasty from 1248-1465. This koranic school then was rebuilt by the Saadian Sultan Moulay Abdallah (Abdallah al-Ghalib) in the 16th century. With Rahmat, we walked through the souk next to Jamaa el Fna to reach this place.

Inside the building, we were truly empressed with the decoration of fine carving which sort of representing the character of this building as a koranic school. The wood carvings are particularly very impressive. According to our DK Travel Guide, the walls are decorated with zellij tilework.I, however cannot imagine that this place can cater up to 900 students.
