The 'ticks' of clocks around the globe: History revisited

Do you know that the world standard time was introduced at a conference in Washington in 1884? Before that, there were few versions of time systems across the globe. The Greenwich Meridian located at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich had been used widely as the reference meridian by a majority of ships and tonnage. Therefore in 1884 Washington Conference, a majority of the conference delegates selected the Greenwich Meridian as a standard Prime Meridian. Based on the information in Wikipedia, only France did not vote for this and opted for using the Paris Meridian.

If you visit London, don't forget to visit the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The best thing to make this trip is to take a city cruise at Westminster Pier or Waterloo Pier. The observatory area is about 15-20 minutes walk from the Greenwich Pier. You will walk through the Greenwich Park. Make sure you wear a suitable shoes because you will need to climb a steep path to reach the observatory. It can be quite tiring but the knowledge that you gain from visiting this place is priceless.

Then after the visit, you can spend sometimes visiting few important places around Greenwich. The National Maritime Museum can be fun for kids. The Queen's House is just around the corner.
