The 'ticks' of clocks around the globe: Berlin, Germany
Whenever we travelled to another foreign country, I just had to take photos of the interesting use of the clocks either as a landmark or simply for the public use. Here few photos from our collections during our visit to Berlin April last year.
The World Clock (Weltzeituhr) at Alexanderplatz, Berlin - Germany: If you watch the film 'The Bourne Supremacy', you will remember a scene where Jason Bourne arranges a meeting with Nicky at the World Clock. The World Clock is really unique. We were not aware about the significance of this clock when we took the photo. We just admired the design of the clock which represents time from all over the world. According to the web info here: ' a colorful enameled cylinder with etched aluminum plates rotates atop a column and displays the names of different countries and the current time of day in the world’s most important cities. The spheres attached on rotary metal circles above the cylinder symbolize the planets in their orbits.' We only realized the significance of this clock after re-reading the DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide for Berlin to check again about the interesting places around Alexanderplatz. However we're still wonder the reason behind the design of the World Time Clock!
The second photo near the Bahnoff Postdamer Platz is 'the reconstruction of the first traffic lights in Europe' (source: DK travel book). Few, however, disagreed with the claims. The modern electric traffic light was invented by the US.
At the back of the Neptune Fountain is the Berlin Red Town Hall (Rotes Rathaus). It was called the Rotes Rathaus because of the red color of the building materials. My hubby was standing in front of the tower ruins of the memorial church to commemorate Kaiser Wilhelm I. This Kaiser Wilherm Memorial Church is an important landmark as a reminder of the brutal war. The church tower has a clock with a roman numeral and the clock was working perfectly well! Then around Kurfurstendamm, we took photos of this list of the horror sites near the underground station. My hubby -a walking encyclopedia about the Germany and World War II history -alerted me about the list.
